Greek houses accused of violations that occurred at the start of the semester

PULLMAN — Three Washington State Universities are under investigation for alleged incidents that occurred at the beginning of the fall semester.

Tau Kappa Epsilon has been suspended from all chapter activities, according to WSU’s Center for Community Standards webpage. The fraternity is being investigated for several violations that allegedly happened between Aug. 18-30, including hazing, reckless endangerment, harassment, alcohol and defying university policy.

Sigma Phi Epsilon has been banned from hosting any social events. The fraternity is being investigated for an incident that allegedly occurred Aug. 25, according to the webpage. The house is being accused of reckless endangerment, theft or damage to property, and physical harm or direct threats.

The webpage said Sigma Phi Epsilon was penalized in the spring semester for furnishing alcohol to minors.

The Sigma Chi fraternity has been restricted from hosting events with alcohol present. The webpage said the Greek house is being investigated for an alleged incident Aug. 25 that involved reckless endangerment and physical harm or direct threats.

The webpage shows Sigma Chi was sanctioned for furnishing alcohol to minors around this time last year.

In 2022, Washington law began requiring institutions to publicly report information about violations to prevent hazing and other offenses related to alcohol, drugs, sexual and physical assault, according to the webpage.

The law, also known as “Sam’s law,” was created after WSU student Sam Martinez died in 2019 from alcohol poisoning while pledging the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, according to past Moscow-Pullman Daily News reporting.
