Donald B. Nickels, of Moscow, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, at his home in Moscow. He was 44.
Donald entered this world on Sept. 28, 1979, in Junction City, Kan., to two U.S. Army officers and proud parents, Ronald and Christie Nickels. Donald graduated Moscow High School in 1997, and later completed his college education at the University of Idaho in 2001.
Following his college studies, Donald embarked upon dedicated service as an officer in the U.S. Army, where his commitment led him to serve his country with honor, including a tour of duty in Iraq and duty stations in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Fort Lewis, Wash. After leaving military service, Donald transitioned into various roles within the field of human resources, making meaningful contributions in both Washington and Idaho. He ultimately returned to Moscow to care for his mother, exemplifying his deep-rooted devotion to family.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Donald was known for his passions outside of work. An enthusiastic runner, he found solace and joy in pounding the pavement, seeking new challenges with every stride. His affinity for poker and willingness to indulge in peculiar culinary adventures showcased his adventurous spirit and zest for life.
Donald is preceded in death by his father, Ronald, whose memory he honored dearly. He leaves behind a legacy of love and memories which are cherished by his devoted mother, Christie Nickels, and his brothers Bryan (Robin) Nickels and Ernest (Delma) Nickels. He also leaves behind his nephew, nieces, uncle, aunts and a multitude of cousins, all of whom were touched by his warmth and kindness.
A private family service to honor Donald’s life and mourn his passing will be held later this week at the Moscow Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Humane Society of the Palouse in Donald’s memory, reflecting his compassion for animals and commitment to their well-being.
