Carol Morton of Moscow died Dec. 26 at the Good Samaritan Home in Moscow. She was 88.

Carol was born Dec. 19, 1920, in Rockford, Ill. She retired in 1976 after 25 years as a telephone operator in Rockford. She was also active for many years as a volunteer in Rockford and Moscow hospitals.

In 1976, she married Don Morton of Moscow. Carol and Don belonged to Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Moscow. During the next 16 years, they traveled extensively and hosted friends and family at their home. She possessed a love of the outdoors, a great sense of humor and an adventuresome spirit, even learning to ski when she was 65 years old.

She is survived by her five children: Sharon Lonsway (David) of Rockford; Dennis Smith (Kathleen Hayes) of Portland, Ore.; Susan Irvin (Michael) of Moscow; David Smith (Karen) of Elkhart Lake, Wis.; Douglas Smith (Yvonne) of San Antonio, Texas; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Moscow Public Library. Short's Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements, and online condolences may be left at www.shortsfuneralchapel.net.
