Patricia Juarene Peek

Patricia Juarene Cary Peek passed away Friday, May 10, 2024, at Paradise Creek Health in Moscow from Parkinson’s-related causes. She was born on Aug. 25, 1937, in Hobbs, N.M., where her father worked in the oil fields. Patricia is a good example of the American dream. Born under humble circumstances, she worked hard to acquire an education and continued on to help others and live a highly diverse life. Her family moved to Prairie City, Ore., while she was in school, and her teachers recognized her intellect and encouraged her to go to college.

She found employment as a messenger in Portland, Ore., but her employers also encouraged her to go on. With the help of the National Defense Education Act, she graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in education and a master’s degree in special education. She taught special education in Eugene, Ore., for many years, got married, and then divorced. She married James Peek on Aug 27, 1980, and moved to a residence east of Viola. She taught special education for children at Potlatch, retiring at age 55. She was an active member of the Great Old Broads for Wilderness and the Palouse LaTreks in Moscow. She authored three books: One Winter in the Wilderness, Cougar Dave and Silver Threads.
