Roberta M. Smith-Kosin was born Nov. 21, 1923, in Choteau, Mont., and raised in Missoula, Mont. She died April 13, 2013, in Seattle, Wash.

She earned her bachelor's in 1944 from the University of Montana in nutrition and her master's in 1957 from Washington State University in home economics. She married and raised six sons.

In 1976, she and her husband retired to Bandon, Ore., where they began a Bed and Breakfast called "Spindrift." In 1988, a widow, she joined the Peace Corps and served as a volunteer until 1992. She then volunteered as interpreter and guide at National Wildlife Refuges and Parks. She settled in Seattle in 1997 and married Igor Kosin in 1999. Together they traveled to places around the world. She was a free spirit, admired by friends and family. She is survived by six sons, nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
