William Herman Smith, known as Bill, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2024, in Spokane Valley, at the age of 71. Born in Muscatine, Iowa, Bill moved with his parents to Idaho, where he attended Moscow High School and studied theater at the University of Idaho.
Bill loved his family deeply — the one he was born into and the many friends who comprised his chosen family, especially colleagues from Inland Northwest Insurance.
Bill was creative, expressive, theatrical, good-natured, gentle-spirited, stubborn, wry and hilarious. He loved the Seattle Seahawks, going to movies and concerts, and visits with family and friends. A true music lover, he joyfully introduced many people to artists across genres and generations, encouraging a wide-ranging appreciation of everything from folk music to glam rock, the blues, pop and country. A natural performer with a flair for the irreverent, he could do a perfect rendition of Tom Lehrer’s “Vatican Rag.”
Bill is survived by his sister, Mary Parsons; five nieces and nephews; 11 great-nieces and nephews; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman (Sid) and Thelma Smith, and siblings Judith Johnson and Richard Smith.
Bill’s humor, his love for the arts and his warmth will be greatly missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory can be made to Meals on Wheels, 1222 W. Second Ave., Spokane, WA 99201. The family will plan a memorial celebration at a future date.
