MOSCOW — The unbeaten Moscow Bears held off a 2-point conversion run attempt from the visiting Pullman Greyhounds on the final play of overtime to seal an epic 26-25 nonleague border battle football victory at Bear Field on Friday.

Quarterback Noah Velasco, who had been battling an ankle injury, connected with wide receiver Butch Kiblen on critical scoring plays late in regulation and overtime to help Moscow (4-0) first extend the game, then claim its first win over Pullman (0-2) since 2021.

“It was a game-time decision whether (Velasco) would even play or not,” Moscow coach Rob Bafus said. “He really gutted up.”

The Bears notched the first score of the game when Velasco passed to Keaton Frei, but Pullman answered in the second quarter with a Vaughn Holstad interception return touchdown, then pulled ahead 13-6 with a pass from Connor Stewart to Evan Anderson on the final play before intermission. The Bears knotted things up at 19 by the end of regulation, then pulled ahead 26-19 in the extra period on the Velasco-to-Kiblen play followed by a Wyatt Thornycroft kick.

There was a scary moment when Pullman lost a player late in overtime to a neck injury.

The Greyhounds still managed one last score off a Stewart pass to Holstad, taking the game down to the all-or-nothing 2-point play, which was held off by the Bears.

“I was really proud of our kids and our coaching staff,” Pullman coach Kevin Agnew said. “We had a good week together. The kids played their hearts out tonight; just came up a little short.”

This was the second consecutive single-point defeat for the Greyhounds to start the season, following a 7-6 loss to Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls last week. It was a second straight area rivalry win for Moscow, coming after a 19-6 result against Clarkston.

“It was really just a storybook game,” Bafus said. “Huge crowd, border battle, and I’m pretty sure everybody in the stands was entertained from the first snap to the last.”
