ASOTIN — Senior captain Peter Eggleston had perhaps the greatest minute of play in his high school career to pull a season-opening football battle out of the fire for the Asotin Panthers on their home field Saturday against Tri-Cities Prep of Pasco, Wash.
The Panthers prevailed 34-29 in a game which saw a half-dozen lead changes.
Eggleston ran a 65-yard interception return with about a minute remaining in regulation to put Asotin ahead 28-21 in the seesaw contest, only for the visitors to respond with a score and two-point conversion with 23 seconds left on the clock. The Panther running back then found more magic, responding with a 70-yard kickoff return that gave his team its winning edge with 9.1 seconds to spare.
Eggleston totaled more than 200 all-purpose offensive yards for the game. Cody Ells added 113 yards rushing, including one touchdown, and made a 62-yard touchdown pass to Wyatt Caldwell.
“Just really proud of how we competed and showed a lot of resiliency tonight,” Asotin coach Jim Holman said.

Trojans top Fong Memorial field
Unbeaten Troy made a clean 6-0 run through small-and-big school teams alike en route to the Judy Fong Memorial Tournament title at Lewiston High School.
The Trojans first defeated Timberline of Weippe, Logos of Moscow and Sandpoint in pool play — all in straight sets under the event’s best-of-three format. Advancing to the championship Gold bracket, Troy then swept Potlatch and Moscow in two and went to three sets before prevailing against host Lewiston in the final.
“This was such a long tournament that it really pushed my girls to the max,” Troy coach Deborah Blazzard said. “Potlatch, Moscow and Lewiston, we were all down early, so all three of them we just battled back. I just feel like the girls showed a lot of perseverance and they just never got down.”
Blazzard added that Teagan Gale and Tessa Stoner “hit really well for us” and Emma Wells had an “excellent night serving.”
