CALDWELL, Idaho — Top-seeded Lapwai shut out Butte County of Arco, Idaho, in the opening quarter en route to a 68-42 victory in the Idaho Class 1A Division I semifinals Friday at Vallivue High School in Caldwell.

The Wildcats (24-2) were led by powerhouse Kase Wynott with 32 points and 18 rebounds, while Chrisopher Bohnee had a big game of his own with 14 points and 13 boards.

Lapwai will look to avenge a defeat from last year’s title game today as it takes on Lakeside at 10:30 a.m. Pacific in the Ford Idaho Center.

CALDWELL, Idaho — The Mustangs led the Warriors by two at halftime but ultimately couldn’t prevail in a loser-out game at the Idaho Class 1A Division II state tournament at Caldwell High School.

The Warriors went punch-for-punch with the Mustangs in the third quarter and trailed by just one going into the fourth.

Watersprings was able to tie and eventually pull away from Deary in the final eight minutes and outscored the Mustangs 16-8 in the fourth quarter to secure the seven-point win and end Deary’s season.

Laithan Proctor had 12 points to lead the Mustangs (13-10) and Tucker Ashmead added 11.

SPOKANE — Brynn McGaughy’s 24 points and a double-double from Hailey Demler weren’t enough for the Bulldogs as they fell to the Vikings in a loser-out game at the Washington class 2B state tournament at Spokane Arena.

Colfax (22-5) held the early advantage and had a five-point lead at halftime.

Mabton (19-7) clawed back in the third quarter to tie the game going into the final eight minutes. The Vikings continued their momentum and outscored the Bulldogs 20-15 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Hailey Demler had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs, Brenna Gilchrist added 11 and Ava Swan had an all-around showing with six points and eight rebounds.

SPOKANE — The Vikings put up a strong second-half effort and got a balanced showing from their players but were unable to preserve their season against league-rival Knights in a loser-out game at the Washington Class 1B state tournament game at Spokane Arena.

Sunnyside Christian and Garfield-Palouse were both strong on defense. Both teams had just one quarter where they scored double-digit points.

The Knights (22-4) hit their stride of offense and led by six at halftime.

The Vikings (18-7) came back in the third to bring the game within one going into the fourth, but Sunnyside Christian saved its best offensive frame for last and outscored Garfield-Palouse by four to earn the five-point win.

Kyra Brantner led the Vikings with nine points and pulled down six rebounds. Elena Flansburg added eight points for the Vikings and had six boards of her own.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE TENNIS

SPOKANE — The Cougars swept through doubles competition and won five singles matches to earn a 6-1 nonconference team dual win against the Bulldogs at the Stevens Center.

Every doubles match went at least eight games for Washington State and half of the singles matches went extra sets, but the Cougars secured the lopsided dual win against their in-state foes. The lone blemish was WSU’s Yura Nakagawa’s 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 No. 2 singles loss to Gonzaga’s Kianna Oda.

The most lopsided victories of the dual for the Cougars was Fifa Kumhom’s 6-3, 6-3 win in No. 4 singles, Eva Alvarez Sande’s 6-3, 6-3 win in No. 1 singles and the duo of Nakagawa and Kumhom’s 6-2 win in No. 2 doubles.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Washington State vs. Rhode Island game postsponed

The Washington State home opener against Rhode Island was postponed in the bottom of the first inning due to snow at Bailey-Brayton Field.

The game will resume with Casen Taggart to bat at 12:05 p.m. today. The Cougars will play a scheduled doubleheader today following the completion of the postponed game.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

WSU schedule announced

The Washington State football team announced its 2024 schedule, highlighted by a netural-site Apple Cup matchup at Lumen Field in Week 3, a home contest against Texas Tech in Week 2 and a late Novemeber meeting with Oregon State.

The Cougars open the season against Football Championship Subdivision opponent Portland State on Aug. 31.

“Football games on the Palouse are unlike any other in the country,” WSU Athletic Director Pat Chun said in a news release. “Each weekend is an opportunity to come home, support the football team and enjoy everything that makes Washington State so special. The 2024 schedule will be unlike any we’ve had in the past.”

WSU will travel to Boise to play the Broncos in Week 5 on Sept. 28 at Albertsons Stadium.

The Cougars entered into a scheduling agreement with the Mountain West Conference for six games. WSU will play one Pac-12 Conference game, against Oregon State, and 11 nonconference matchups throughout their campaign.
