It doesn’t quite qualify as a superstition, though it is nice for the group to have somewhere to place the blame. When Pullman’s 400-meter relay team received word of its timeWednesdayafternoon, the boys knew exactly why the result wasn’t what they desired.

They ran without their good-luck baton: a souvenir from the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, gifted to the Hounds by way of former Washington State University track coach John Chaplin, who also manned the United States’ men’s team that year.

“We like to use that one,” said Pullman anchor Joe Tingstad. “We didn’t have ittoday, so we’re going to just say that’s why we didn’t run as fast.”

Still, their time of 44.66 seconds was fast enough to snatch first place at this Washington 2A Great Northern League dual meet against the Clarkston Bantams, a theme that would continue throughout the evening.

The Pullman boys bested the Bantams 117-28, and the Hounds’ girls did so as well, 122-27.

But realistically, the absence of the lucky baton isn’t why Tingstad’s unit didn’t top its mark of 43.63 from last weekend’s Sweeney Invitational.

“We like to make a joke about it as if that could be the reason why we ran slow, but we didn’t have the best handoffs,” said Trey Lopes, who ran the second legWednesday. “We just have to practice our handoffs and we’ll be as fast as we were, or faster than last week.

The 400 relay was one of four first-place finishes for the senior sprinter who ran on the winning 1600 relay and won the 100 (11.77) and 200.

“That was my first time ever running the 200, and I just wanted to give it a shot and see how I was at it,” said Lopes, who crossed the line in 23.79 seconds. “It felt really good. I had a great start out of the blocks and I finished through.”

Like his fellow senior teammate, Tingstad also grabbed a handful of top finishes, winning the 110 and 300 hurdles in 16.33 and 44.52 seconds, respectively.

“It’s just overall impressive a kid has talent in so many areas,” co-head coach Amy Ripley said of the future Whitworth University decathlete, who also placed second in the long jumpWednesday. “He’s just an impressive kid, in both track and field.”

Other two-time winners on the Pullman boys’ side included Cole Hawes in the high and triple jumps and Aron James in the 800 and 1600.

For the Pullman girls, Carolena Sears (100, 200), Mayyi Mahama (shot put, discus) and Asha Campbell (long, triple jump) each won two individual events apiece.

“Mayyi Mahama, she just works tirelessly,” co-head coach Kristen Walker said.

Clarkston’s Dalton Phillips was one of few Bantams to outdo the Hounds in an individual event, seizing the shot put and discus with throws of 43-5½ and 115-07. Clarkston’s Anna Sharp won the girls’ javelin.

Stepping onto the track for a much shorter race than she’s accustomed was Pullman’s Elyria Kabasenche, the reigning 2A state champion in the 5K, who had took the 400 onWednesday, tracking down Clarkston’s Makinzie Packwood to cross the line first in a time of 1:02.83.

“It was hard,” Kabasenche said. “I definitely started out like a distance runner, and I had to catch her in the end.”
