CALDWELL, Idaho — Moscow starting pitcher Butch Kiblen struck out 11 batters and closer Connor Isakson fanned the only batter he faced for the final out as the Bears defeated Blackfoot 8-1 in an Idaho Class 4A state baseball tournament semifinal game Friday at Vallivue High School.

Levi Anderson and leadoff man JP Breese each went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run apiece to lead the Bears (19-7) at the plate. Isakson and Jack Driskill each scored a pair of runs.

Moscow’s win ended a 13-game winning streak for the Broncos (23-6).

Moscow will play Bishop Kelly in the championship game at 4 p.m. Pacific today at the same site.

BOISE — Moscow’s Megan Highfill had five hits for the Bears and Kaci Kiblen added a home run, but it wasn’t enough as the Bears’ season came to an end after a win against Blackfoot and a loss to Hillcrest in the Idaho Class 4A state tournament at Coeur d’Alene High School.

Kiblen had two hits, a double and a home run, to lift the Bears past Blackfoot in an early-morning elimination game. Kelly Stodick earned the win from the pitcher’s circle.

In another elimination game against Hillcrest, the Bears (17-12) went down 5-2 early and couldn’t recover.

Highfill had two hits, including a double, to lead Moscow in the nightcap.

Kiya Soza went the distance and struck out four to earn the win for Colton (13-5).

Bell totaled three hits for the Wildcats. Kaydee Heitstuman added three hits, including two doubles.

Colton will play Liberty Christian of Richland, Wash., at 11 a.m. today in the next round of the district crossover at the same site.

Asotin, Colfax’s seasons come to an end in district tournament

SPOKANE — The Panthers got by the Bulldogs in an elimination game but lost their second one to the Broncos of Ritzville, Wash., in a Class 2B district tournament.

Cady Browne had four hits, including a home run and two doubles, to lead Asotin (12-9) past Colfax (14-10). Kierra Nielson earned the win for the Panthers.

KeiLena Nelson had two hits, a home run and a double, to lead the Bulldogs.

In Asotin’s second elimination game, Browne had another home run in a losing effort against Lind-Ritzville/Sprague.

Prairie’s Elven among several area athletes to win events at 1A/2A state meet

MIDDLETON, Idaho — Prairie of Cottonwood’s Sage Elven earned an individual state title in the discus event with a personal-best hurl of 142 feet, 11 inches at Day 1 of the Class 1A state track meet at Middleton High School.

The Pirates’ medley relay team of Alli Geis, Aubree Rehder, Kennedy Riener and Sydney Shears also topped the podium with a time of 1 minute, 54.99 seconds.

Sara Casebolt of Logos (3,200 meters) and Kathryn Burnette of Potlatch (shot put) also claimed individual state titles.

Moscow’s Nuhn tops hurdles prelims

MERIDIAN — Moscow’s Mattea Nuhn posted the top times in the prelims in both the girls 110 hurdles (14.78 seconds) and 300 hurdles (46.09) at the 4A state meet at Mountain View High School. Finals will be today.

Moscow’s Cora Crawford was fifth in the girls 3,200 (11:27.36).

The meet concludes today at the same site.

Hounds field state qualifiers

SPOKANE VALLEY — Pullman’s Judah Fitzgerald (800) and Chris Druffel (pole vault) logged gold-medal finishes to highlight area results in the Class 2A district meet held at West Valley High School.

Top-two finishers and all who delivered automatic qualifying marks in their events will advance to the Washington 2A state meet, which is set for May 23-25 at Mount Tahoma Athletic Stadium in Tacoma.

Pullman’s 1,600 relay team of Cici Maile, Jennabee Harris, Oluwatomisin Oloniyo and Ada Harris took third, but registered an automatic qualifying time of 4 minutes, 8.85 seconds.

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

Hounds, Bantams battling for state berths

SPOKANE — Pullman and Clarkston each qualified multiple players for the semifinals with 2-0 showings on Day 1 of the Class 2A district tournament competition held at Shadle Park High School for boys and West Valley for girls.

Top-two finishers in their brackets will advance to the state tournament to be held at Seattle’s Nordstrom Tennis Center on Friday and Saturday of next week.

The Greyhound boys are represented in all four semifinals between the singles and doubles brackets. Nathan Sutton and Reed Newell are among the last four in singles and could meet either in the championship round or in a third/fourth or second/third-place match. The top-seeded Pullman pairing of Aditya Bose-Bandyopadhyay and Benjamin Lee will play in the opposite doubles semi from fellow Hounds Neal Wang and Caleb Snider, who are set to face cousins and second seeds Alex and Cody Whittle of Clarkston.

In girls competition, No. 1 singles seed Diana Gutierrez of Pullman and the top Clarkston girls doubles pairing of Olivia Gustafson and Ella Leavitt headline semifinal qualifiers.

Gutierrez will take on her teammate Johanna Mueller for a spot in the title round, where Gabriella Mills of Clarkston will hope to meet the winner. Gustafson and Leavitt are up against fourth-seeded Lynnsey Biorn and Jasmine Thapa of Pullman, and could potentially meet their compatriots Eloise Teasley and Kayla Frei for the title.

Districts resume at 10 a.m. today, with both boys and girls playing at Rogers High School.

EUGENE, Ore. — Washington State surrendered seven runs in the eighth inning to No. 20 Oregon, which rallied to win its fourth straight Pac-12 Conference game against the Cougars going back to last season.

The Cougars (21-31, 9-20 Pac-12) received a solo home run from Joey Kramer, an RBI-single from Logan Johnstone and a pinch-hit two-run single from Alan Shibley.

The Ducks (36-16, 18-11) and Cougs close the three-game series at 12:05 p.m. today at the same site.

WSU’s Bebich tied for first at NGI

MARICOPA, Ariz. — Washington State’s Preston Bebich is tied for first place after the first round of the National Golf Invitational at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.

Bebich hit a 5-under-par 67 to tie with TCU’s Jack Beauchamp atop the leaderboard.

As a team, WSU is fourth at 5-under 283.

The Cougars continue the three-day event at 7 a.m. today.
