AREA ROUNDUP

COEUR D’ALENE — Moscow’s Mattea Nuhn notched two first-place finishes in track and field at the Rasmussen Invite on Friday at Coeur d’Alene High School.

Nuhn topped the podium in the 100-meter hurdles (15.61 seconds) and 300 hurdles (47.60).

Jessika Lassen placed first in the 400 with a time of 1:00.94. The pair were also on Moscow’s 1,600 relay team, which took first place in 4:10.62.

The Moscow girls (130 points) were second in team scoring behind Coeur d’Alene with 18-of-19 events scored.

Lewiston (116) led the boys field with 17-of-19 events scored.

Noah Carpenter placed first in the 100 (11.42) and 200 (23.44) for the Bengals.

Lewiston’s Deegan Everett topped the podium in the long jump (20 feet, 6 inches) and triple jump (39-7.5).

COLFAX — Colfax’s Ava Swan totaled three hits, including a home run, and held the Cougars hitless in Game 2 to lead the Bulldogs to a Northeast 2B League doubleheader sweep.

Swan earned the win from the circle in Game 2 for Colfax (9-5, 6-2). Harley Hennigar earned the win in Game 1.

Hennigar added two hits for the Bulldogs, one of which was a double.

Asotin JV 24-22, Colton 6-4

COLTON — Colton got two hits apiece from Silas Nollmeyer, Ryan Impson and Tanner Baerlocher but dropped both games of a doubleheader against Asotin’s junior varsity.

The Wildcats (1-12) put up two or more runs in three different innings across the doubleheader, but couldn’t stop the Panthers’ offense.

Blake Watson had four hits, including two doubles, to lead Asotin.

SPOKANE — Pullman’s Ryliann Bednar notched a 12-place finish with a score of 14-over 85 at the Eleen Northcutt Inviational at the Wandermere Golf Course in Spokane.

The Greyhounds (277 strokes) were tied for eighth as team with West Valley of Spokane Valley.

Faith Sampson finished tied for 23rd with a score of 23-over 93.

LEWISTON — Shorthanded Pullman narrowly fell to Sandpoint in an Idaho-rules coed team dual to kick off its run in the quad-match event at Lewiston High School.

In No. 1-level matches, the Greyhounds benefited from hard-fought wins by the girls pairing of Lynnsey Biorn and Daun Park as well as the mixed duo of Caleb Snider and Azriah Seeber. The Hounds fell decisively at boys and girls No. 1 singles, while the top Pullman boys doubles team of Aditya Bose-Bandyopadhyay and Mir Park suffered a gut-wrenching 6-3, 1-6, 10-8 defeat in a super-tiebreak. Boys No. 3 singles player Daniel Schertenleib blitzed to the most lopsided win of the day for Pullman, prevailing 6-2, 6-0 win in a performance coach Cody Wendt praised for its dynamic energy, while Amy Fugh was almost as dominant in a 6-1, 6-2 showing at girls No. 2 singles.

Moscow’s Alyssa Halvorson and Petra Kennedy picked up a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 1 girls doubles over Sydney Muir and Abby Lloyd.

Cate Gloeckner notched a 2-6, 6-4, 12-10 victory over Ashley Webster at No. 1 girls singles for the Bears.

Washington State dropped the opening doubles contest and never recovered as it fell to Washington in a Pac-12 women’s tennis match at the WSU outdoor tennis courts on Friday.

Hania Abouelsaad and Martina Markov notched the Cougs only win in No. 3 doubles, a 7-5 decision over Melissa Sakar and Catherine Gagnon.

Washington’s Dariya Detkovskaya and Erika Matsuda notched a 6-4 decision over Yura Nakagawa and Fifa Kumhom in No. 2 doubles.

With the match outcome no longer in doubt, the final three matches were all stopped, with all in the third set.

WSU wins Fawley Cup

COLTON — Washington State bested Gonzaga to win its 29th Fawley Cup.

The Cougars first varsity eight team of Amy Patten, Jess Schneider, Siena Snow, Fiona Elliott, Eliza Dawson, Ilaria Macchi, Jaeve Proberts and Sydney Wick finished with a time of 6 minutes, 33.24 seconds to beat Gonzaga by about four seconds (6:37.28).

WSU opened with a loss to Gonzaga in the second varsity four race. The Bulldogs finished with a time of 7.53.00 while the Cougs finished in 8.04.74.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Arizona 8, Washington State 7

TUCSON, Ariz. — Washington State’s Max Hartman and Kyle Russell combined for four RBI in the ninth inning, but No. 21 Arizona was able to fight back and secure the walk-off Pac-12 win at Hi Corbett Field.

Russell notched a two-RBI single to give the Cougars a 7-5 lead going into the bottom of the ninth.

The Wildcats (22-14, 11-15) got a walk-off RBI single from Maddox Mihalakis half an inning later.

Russell led Washington State (18-18, 7-12) with four hits and Joey Kramer had a home run for the Cougars.
