The Pullman Police Department sergeant who was arrested in October for first-degree custodial sexual misconduct after allegedly having sex with a Washington State University student has resigned from the department.
Dan Hargraves submitted his resignation one day before he was to be interviewed by Pullman Police Department investigators conducting an internal investigation to determine if he had violated department policy, according to a PPD news release.
The internal investigation was completed without a statement from Hargraves.
It concluded he violated several policies, including involvement in criminal conduct, failure to activate his body-worn camera, failure to make proper notifications when transporting a female and improper treatment of persons in custody.
Hargraves, a 19-year veteran of the department, was arrested on Oct. 30 after a nearly six-month investigation that began in April, when an 18-year-old WSU student alleged she was sexually assaulted by an officer who gave her a ride home in the early hours March 31. The criminal investigation was conducted by Washington State Patrol.
Hargraves pleaded not guilty in Whitman County Superior Court on Nov. 9.
Pullman Police Chief Gary Jenkins submitted a notice to the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission that Hargraves resigned from service due to “disqualifying conduct.”
That will begin a process to decertify Hargraves as a peace officer in Washington.
