Long receives three years supervised probation

A Harvard, Idaho, man who threatened a woman with a knife and a gun in November was sentenced to three years of supervised probation Tuesday in Latah County District Court.

District Judge John Judge suspended Adam Long’s five-year prison sentence as part of a plea agreement. Long pleaded guilty to aggravated assault.

Long was arrested by regional SWAT team members Nov. 20 at his Harvard home a day after a woman reported he had threatened her with a knife and a 9mm gun while they were at his residence off Idaho Highway 6.

Long pointed a handgun at her face. Later, when she tried to drive away, he reportedly shot out her vehicle’s tire.

The victim had a laceration on her hand and bruises, but declined to be taken to the hospital.

On Friday, Deputy Prosecutor Jessica Uhrig showed Judge a video from a camera inside the home where the incident occurred. The video showed Long pointing a gun at the woman.

Long served 22 days in Latah County Jail.

The reduced sentence is a result of Long’s behavior since his jail stint. Uhrig said Long has sought mental health counseling and medication. He has also passed drug tests and is a suitable candidate for community supervision.

Long apologized for the crime Tuesday and said he is “really embarrassed” by it. Judge told him to “be very vigilant” about addressing his mental health issues.

Judge said the court does not want to send people to prison with mental health issues if they can be treated in the community.

Judge said Long will be under tight supervision as part of his probation, which also includes drug tests and prohibits him from possessing weapons.
